Frankly speaking, my knowledge of gold rush era was limited. I was born and raised in Asia, while the gold rush only occurred in America, Australia and Africa One day I was watching my favourite Korean variety show (Running Man!) and through it discovered Sovereign Hill – this awesome place in Australia that is a living tribute to the gold rush era.
There and then, I vowed to visit it sometime soon, and last June I actually had a chance to. In my opinion, it is so far the best and coolest museum I have ever been to! If you are looking for what to do or where to visit in Australia, or if you are particularly interested in exploring alternative activities in Australia, Sovereign Hill is one option to highly consider!
Sovereign Hill is an open-air museum situated in the historic city of Ballarat, around 1.5 hours drive from Melbourne. It depicts Ballarat’s first ten years after the 1851 Victorian gold rush. The unique selling point of this place is the reenactment of the gold rush era that brings visitors back in time. Visitors can see and have a hands-on experience of how life was during the gold rush era.
Along the main street of Sovereign Hill, there are shops selling 1850s-style goods, hotels, schools and various buildings that visitors can access. Visitors are also entertained by the costumed goldfields characters with theatrical events!
As Sovereign Hill portrays the gold rush era, the most anticipated activities are those related to GOLD: the gold mine tour, gold pouring demonstration, gold museum and the renowned gold panning!
So, all in all, Sovereign Hill is very worth visiting! People can know and discover more about the gold rush era in a fun and interactive way. Step back in time to the nineteenth century Ballarat and join the gold frenzy!
