Where to Eat in Ubud: Sawah Indah Restaurant

Sawah Indah is one of Bali’s many restaurants that lets you dine in the middle of rice fields. My family and I wanted to go to the more famous Bebek Tepi Sawah for their fried crispy duck dish, but our driver insisted that we try this other place. He probably got a commission from the restaurant for bringing guests there. Oh well, there is no harm trying!

The restaurant was nestled by a patch of rice fields, and made up of a few separate buildings. It had an open air dining area, as well as separate thatched huts where you can eat lesehan-style – meaning you sit on the floor without chairs, Indonesian-style 😉 All of them came with views of the surrounding greeneries.

Sawah Indah’s signature dish – Gurami Timbung

The menu was classic Indonesian-style cooking, and the most popular item was Gurami Timbung. Gurami is a type of fish that’s very popular in Indonesian cuisine – I have no idea what it’s called in english, google translate calls it “gourami”. Here the fish is cooked inside a bamboo tube. The server will bring the whole thing to the table, and make a show out of getting the fish out on to a plate. It was really interesting, but the flavour was just okay. It was good, but not as spectacular as it was made out to be.

Sawah Indah also serves a crispy fried duck dish. It did not hold a candle to Bebek Tepi Sawah’s crispy fried duck in terms of size, but I’m happy to report that it was VERY DELICIOUS. Maybe because it was smaller, the seasoning really penetrated every part of the duck. The meat was fork-tender on the inside while the skin was satisfyingly crispy. We ordered second helpings because it was so good and one portion was simply wasn’t enough for the four of us.

Other than that we also ordered Gado-Gado (Indonesian-style vegetables salad with peanut gravy) and Lele Goreng (fried catfish). The rice came in a wooden basket for us to share.

Overall it was a satisfactory dining experience. If you’re looking for where to eat in Ubud, and if you are bored of the usual suspects you can try out this place. When I went to their website, I found out that apparently they also offer outdoor activities such as rafting and various outdoor games! Maybe next time 😉
