Bathing Boxes in Melbourne: Hidden Gem at Mount Martha Beach

One of the things most tourists want to see when in Victoria is the colourful bathing boxes in Melbourne. Sounds familiar? Do you recall seeing pictures of colourful wooden ‘houses’ by the beach on your friends’ Instagram or Facebook feeds? Yup, those are the bathing boxes I’m talking about. And the most popular place to see these bathing boxes in Melbourne is Brighton Beach.

So of course I went, because I wanted to take pictures those bathing boxes too. And oh my gosh! The beach was really packed, parking was really expensive and the whole experience was just a hassle. But during my trip I found another off-the-beaten-path place where you can also see these iconic bathing boxes, which made for a way better experience! So, the one-million dollar question:

Where is the Best Place for Bathing Boxes In Melbourne?

Brighton Beach — compare this to the picture below!

If you are renting a car in Melbourne, my recommendation is to do a day trip to Mornington Peninsula. If you are doing this, get ready to take in the stunning coastal view on your way to Mornington from Melbourne 😉

And while you are in Mornington, do yourself a favour and visit Mount Martha Beach. You will be able to:

  • Enjoy a quiet walk by the beach. When I was there, there wasn’t anyone else on the beach. It was really amazing to have the beach to myself!
  • Take lots of pictures with the bathing boxes without being stared at by other tourists who want to take photos too. Trust me, that happened to me when I was in Brighton Beach.

One thing to note though, the beach may not be as clean as Brighton’s but you can still take good pictures. Also, there’s nothing much else at Mount Martha Beach apart from the bathing boxes. That’s why I would only recommend this if you have a plan to visit Mornington Peninsula, as it is around the area.

Here are some of the pictures that I took when I was in Mount Martha Beach.
