Bali Eats: Hujan Locale, Ubud

hujan locale ubud

Whether you’re looking for a laid-back lunch or a delightful dinner, Hujan Locale in Ubud is the restaurant to go. It is one of the establishments under Chef Will Meyrick (other notable restaurants under his belt include Mama San and Sarong in Seminyak), of whom A is a major fan 😉

The restaurant is housed in a beautiful colonial-style building, with large wood-paneled windows that open out to let in plenty of fresh air and natural light. The first floor is mostly for the bar and lounge space, while the dining area is in the second floor. Hujan Locale just exudes an overall homey, old-school charm that we really liked.

Dinner at Hujan Locale, Ubud

Hujan Locale has two sittings for dinner, 530pm and 830pm. We booked the earlier sitting, for which we could come anytime after 530pm, as long as we gave the table back by the time the second sitting started.

We arrived at the restaurant around 630pm and were ushered straight to our table on the second floor. The staff were highly knowledgeable about the restaurant and its menu; our waitress deftly recommended us dishes based on our preferences and how hungry we were.

Complimentary rempeyek for appetizer!

We started with the prawn-stuffed chicken wings and fried oxtail soup (“Buntut Goreng”). We particularly liked the Sop Buntut – the oxtail soup came in a dainty bowl, and the soup was only poured in at the table.

We also had the salt-grilled whole fish, which we think was fresh, and texture-wise was tender and juicy, but unfortunately taste-wise came up a bit bland.

By the time we finished our mains the second sitting was starting, so we moved downstairs to have some drinks and desserts. We ordered the panna cotta for dessert – it was light and refreshing, the perfect end to the dinner.

Salak Panna Cotta

Overall verdict? It was a satisfactory meal. Hujan Locale might not be A’s favorite Will Meyrick restaurant, but it fits the bill perfectly for a nice evening out in Ubud.

  1. Looks good! Thanks for sharing, girls! Question: what is the green dip served with the rempeyek? Reminds me of chimichurri but I bet it tastes much different. Look forward to the next post!
